KS1: Oak

Key Stage 1 Oak Class (Year 1 and 2)

Welcome to Oak Class!   Miss Field and Mrs Robbins are the class teachers.

In Oak Class we value the importance of becoming independent and self motivated learners. We love to be pushed out of our comfort zones and to try new things and approaches. We know this will build our confidence and help us to become resilient individuals. Our class motto is 'Mighty Oaks grow from Little Acorns'.

We learn through practical experiences and develop new skills through our work. We work hard to achieve and progress whilst having fun.

We follow the 2014 National Curriculum for Literacy, Numeracy and other non-core subjects. The core skills are delivered in the mornings often during separate year group teaching, incorporating Guided Reading, Phonics/Spelling Shed, Literacy and Numeracy.

In Year 1 there is a period of transition from Foundation Stage when children have whole class teaching followed up with focus group work where the work will be pitched at the child's ability.

In Year 2 we improve on the basic skills learnt in Year 1. We learn to write for purpose and for effect in Literacy and to reason and problem solve in Numeracy. This is great preparation for the start of Key Stage 2 in Willow Class.

Learning at Home
There are so many ways that you can support your child's learning at home.   Getting out and about, exploring the world and talking about experiences are all invaluable.

As part of our homework policy, we ask that all children
  • Read with an adult (5-10 mins per day)
  • Tricky words and spelling practice (5-10 minutes approx 3 times per week)
  • Number bonds and Maths Facts  (5-10 minutes approx 3 times per week)
We will send out information and guidance about this through the year.
Spellings and Maths will be set on a Thursday and tested on the following Thursday. The results of the spelling and maths tests will be sent home via spelling sheets each week.

Pupils will change their reading books on Monday. Pupils are expected to read each night and parents/carers should sign the home reading diary when they have heard their child read.  Pupils will complete a smiley face each time they read.  When they complete a row of smiley faces they will receive a fluffy award in class.  When they have completed their smiley face chart, they will receive a gold token for our book vending machine!

Homework will be set each week on Dojo by the class teachers.
Phonics and Reading in KS1
Continuing our phonics learning from Reception and becoming fluent readers is a key part of Year 1 and Year 2.  At the end of Year 1, children will take the government's Phonics Screening check Phonics screening check 2024: information for parents (text only version) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) and this will be repeated at the end of Year 2 for any children who were not working at the standard set at the end of Year 1.
We continue to work with the Phonics Shed scheme that children started in Reception and children have Guided Reading books, matched to their phonic knowledge, which they work on in school and then take home to practise.  There is information for parents about the Phonics Shed Scheme below.  If you want any further information or guidance, please ask class teachers.
We also want children to enjoy reading and hearing stories, and there is lots of chance for this in school.  We recommend that parents read regularly to their children and there is a selection of recommended books for Years 1 and 2 below.
